Judgment and Apostasy of the Polygamists

7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble [in] judgment. 8 For all tables are full of vomit [and] filthiness, [so that there is] no place [clean]. 9 Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? [them that are] weaned from the milk, [and] drawn from the breasts.(Isa 28:7-9) Lorin Woolley had instructed the Council of Friends that none of them were to organize, colonize, or to hold regular meetings.' He said that they were not to organize wards and stakes, etc., for this was the work of the One Mighty and Strong... The only thing they were authorized to do was to 'keep plural marriage alive,' as John Taylor had also said: Recall that Plural Marriage is a "Law of the Priesthood." 7 Lorin Woolley had warn¬ed the fundamentalist saints against apostasy,8 but regardless of his warnings, signs of this apostasy be¬came evident before he died. John Y. Barlow, for instance, was overly anxious to get the House of God set in order, according to his own ideas on the matter. He oftentimes urged Lorin Woolley on the matter, and couldn't see why they could not begin organizing wards, stakes, etc. Brother Woolley said to `him: "John, that is neither your mission nor my mission. That is the mission of the One Mighty and Strong. Our mission is simply to keep plural marriage alive.'(Journal Notes; Keys of the Priesthood, Illustrated; Lynn L and Stephen L Bishop)
